My name is Rasa Mekuškaitė. I am a costume and textile designer, living and working in Vilnius, Lithuania. While studying at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Fashion Design, I became interested in the secondary use of materials. Residence in the Užupis Art Incubator (2008-2016) and parallel activities in the artistic Republic of Užupis had a great influence on this work. I create clothing and accessories, outdoor decor objects and installations are my creativity expressions are these are focused on the needs of the local community appeared here. There, in Užupis, I started collaborations with similar artistic organizations and their creators from Europe and the South Caucasus.
I focus on issues of sustainability: I am happy to redesign non-wearing clothes, like dead stock and use unnecessary fabrics. These creative impulses I got as a child, in the last years of the Soviet Union time. I have seen many textiles, like clothes or interior details, was sewn, knitting or resewn at home. Handwork is very important to me. This allows the creative process to evolve naturally and discover many interesting solutions.
I also organize and join to various creative workshops with children or adults. The dominant themes here are creativity training and the secondary use of materials.
